Design Story:
Seven Sisters – Miyaymiyaay (Dark Blue)
This is the Dreamtime story of the Pleiades constellation in our night sky.
A group of young men wanted to marry the Seven Sisters, even though it was forbidden by the laws of moiety. They tried to tempt the sisters with honey, but the sisters refused.
One day, the old fire spirit Wurrunnah stole two of the sisters, hoping his warmth would thaw their icy bodies. But instead, their cold touch extinguished his flame. Frustrated, he kept them captive and ordered them to cut bark from a great pine tree.
The sisters knew this tree was the bridge to the sky world. They warned Wurrunnah that if they followed his command, they would never return. But he insisted.
As they began cutting the bark, the sisters started to rise into the sky. They soon heard their five remaining sisters climbing after them. Reunited at last, they remained together in the heavens.
However, the two stolen sisters did not escape unharmed—the touch of Wurrunnah’s flame left them forever dim in the night sky.
